Something out there is worth discovering…

UPDATE June 6, 2015: the owner of the video has made it private. Big loss to all. I am looking out for a replacement recording of Carl Sagan’s historic reading.

Listening to Carl Sagan is an infusion of hope.   This is another wonderful video where Carl Sagan espouses the dream of space exploration; that something “out there is worth discovering.”

I do not believe that there is a single person who has ever lived who has looked up at a night sky populated with uncountable numbers of suns and not thought the same thing. Kudos to Sagan for having articulated this great longing in such a heartfelt and meaningful manner.

Profoto 254712

Would you buy from a vendor who doesn’t know the difference between five inches and five feet?

In the United States  five feet or (sixty inches) may be written as the number five followed by an apostrophe (e.g. 5′).
Five inches is represented by the number five followed by a quotation mark (e.g. 5″).

Adorama knows the Profoto 254712 is five feet in diameter (5′).
Sears and Amazon have their units confused.

EPA plans to study “Potential Impacts of Hydraulic Fracturing on Drinking Water Resources”
in 2011

I came across a 2011 proposal by the EPA which has left me somewhat confused.   Click the image below to download and read the actual document published by our Environmental Protection Agency, “Plan to Study the Potential Impacts of Hydraulic Fracturing on Drinking Water Resources.”

For the record, hydraulic fracturing was pioneered by the Halliburton corporation in 1940.  There are over one million (1,000,000) such wells in the United States with more on the way.

The word “SCIENCE” on the background of the report’s cover is intended to connote scientific method and oversight: that process of systematic thought and labor which put men on the moon and successfully brought them back again.  How exactly is the scientific method to be invoked seventy years after this industrial process began?  It seems a little late to “plan” a study of “potential impacts.”

We are here

Carl Sagan on the  now iconic “pale blue dot” photo.
This video is worth ten minutes of your time.

These ideas came to mind after viewing the video:
• Earth will remain on track, orbiting around our sun, long after we have returned to dust.
• Our biosphere supports a wealth of life operating within a fixed range of variables.
• The Marxist notion of Nature as an endless source of raw materials is as dated as the Dodo.
• If we do not act as agents for positive change no one else will.
• “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that the good do nothing.” While I cannot find the correct attribution for this quote (Burke, Jefferson, Plato?), the power of that thought is timeless.

Magnetic Stimulation of Neural Tissue

When testing out designs for Mykro Dot LED earrings in the late 70s, I discovered that using a an earring wire to carry 1.7 Volts (20 ma) for a couple of hours a day was enough to cause the tissue around the earring piercing to thicken in three to five days. Not wanting to further expose myself to legal action, I opted for a less elegant solution for earrings.

A classmate asked me about stimulating the brain by using electromagnetic pulses as a possible thesis project.  I am all for pushing the limits of cybernetic technologiesX. The block diagram below is representative of interesting research.  Unless you are a budding sociopath testing EMF/EMP technology in its current state of development on yourself, people you know, or strangers, resonates as an extremely bad idea.

Addendum: I just came across this site when researching Helmholtz coils that was all about magnetic healing (Mesmer, anyone?).   There may be something to this in the medical profession for treating Alzheimer’s.  But it still seems like a Radium cure to me.

“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly.   Specialization is for insects.” — Robert A.
